Digital
Imaging Academy
New Media & Technology Team
The Digital Imaging Academy is a Youth Leadership Development model
designed to build the self-esteem of male and female young people, age
16-25, who has an interest in either Photography, Videography or Broadcast
Communications as possible career choices.
The DI-Academy also provides internships for Secondary Photography,
Film and Broadcast Communication school students. Guest faculty is industry
professionals and former alumni who share their experiences and industry
updates with the class as well as participate in productions.
The class curriculum can be adjusted to accommodate students with little
to no computer skills, and depending on the level of computer literacy
of the class, students can first be instructed in basic computer operation,
data entry and the basics of current business software programs, such
as Microsoft Word, Excel and Web Page Construction.
Once students demonstrate basic computer literacy skills and interest
may advance to the Photography and Digital Imaging model. As the youth
participants advance through the model, instruction will also include
basic skills in Videography and Broadcast Communication, conducting
interviews, personal and social development skills, national and international
travel and cultural exchange programs. The New Media skills, coupled
with personal development and communication skills used in a controlled
environment, have proven to be a strong self-esteem builder.
Allowing the young participants to practice their new skills and critique
each other’s work will allow students to see themselves the way others
do. With adult encouragement and guidance from industry professionals,
the young people begin to show positive changes in attitude and personal
presentation such as posture, make-up, clothing and hair choices, producing
a more attractive and polished employment prospect. The motivation does
not stop there. Participants are encouraged to continue with non-traditional
and traditional forms of education and are assisted at every opportunity
with college applications and career advisement.
Advanced DI-Academy students will form local youth media teams and continue
to develop those same new media, personal and social skills. By gaining
accreditation to local and national press conferences, as well as create
live sets and productions to produce five and ten minute special news
segments on interesting individuals and events in Los Angeles and other
cities throughout the United States.
Interviewing corporate executives and politicians at events such as
city council members, town hall meetings and community conferences,
will sharpen the local media teams’ skills and prepare the young people
to qualify for a position on the international level as a member of
the ASD Youth New Media & Technology Team.
The NMT-Team is made up of local media team members, former alumni and
industry professionals. The NMT-Team annually travel as fully accredited
members of the Electronic News Magazine and are temporary fully accredited
members of the United Nations Press Corps. The NMT-Teams cover national,
international and United Nations related events. Beginning in January
2002, the NMT-Teams will begin travel to all of the United Nations offices
starting with New York, Geneva, the Netherlands and Santiago, Chile.
Content developed by the NMT-Teams will be posted on the ElectronicNewsMagazine.com
web site. (ENM) is an electronic web based international news magazine
for youth 16 to 24, produced by the Mitchell Group.
The NMT-Teams are closely associated with the United Nations World Conference
Against Racism, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance Annual Youth Summits,
and the “Nigeria 2002” Youth Summit. Specific teams will be dispatched
to participate and cover these and other Youth Summits as they are scheduled
around the world.
Upon returning home to the United States, the teams will work together
to continue to re-create segments of the program model to capture and
present five, ten minute news segments of positive images in the community.
They will produce live web casts, youth forums and town hall meetings
promoting days of dialogue among youth of all nationality. The local
teams will be ready to tackle tough community issues such as racism,
teen pregnancy, teen fatherhood and the spread of HIV/AIDS with information
directly from the office UN/AIDS in Geneva. Segments that are good enough
can be shown on local access cable and TV news shows or the audio can
simply be extracted for on air radio shows. The ElectronicNewsMagazine.com
web site may also choose to carry the segments. The ENM web site is
produced by the Mitchell Group and hosted by Innovative Publications.com
of Irvine, CA.
Students finishing the program receive an ASD/Digital Imaging Academy
Certificate of Completion, a Portfolio of all completed work. They are
considered alumni and eligible for financial compensation on productions.
Alumni may develop academy models, productions and revenue streams as
well as continue to train and travel with NMT-Teams whenever possible.

young participants and their families with the necessary tools to improve
student grade levels and establish or re-establish damaged relationships
with schoolteachers and administrators.
